African Catholic Lector Ministry

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and welcome to the sacred ministry of the African Catholic Lectors!
We are a vibrant, Spirit-led community of believers drawn from across the African diaspora, united in our calling to proclaim the living Word of God at the liturgy. Rooted in African heritage and enriched by Catholic tradition, our ministry is a unique expression of faith, voice, and mission.
Who Are Lectors?
Lectors are proclaimers of the Word — chosen servants who speak God’s message to His people. In the Liturgy of the Word, Lectors read the First Reading, the Second Reading, and sometimes the Prayers of the Faithful, helping the congregation hear and receive God’s voice through Scripture.
But this ministry is more than reading. It is an anointed calling, a spiritual vocation, and a work of the Holy Spirit. As Lectors, we become instruments of God’s truth, allowing His Word to echo through our voices and touch hearts.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor.” — Luke 4:18
The Power of the Word
In African tradition, oral storytelling is sacred — a way to pass wisdom, truth, and life from one generation to another. Our ministry honors this heritage, and when we stand before God’s people, we do so not just as readers, but as storytellers of salvation, empowered by the Holy Spirit.
When we proclaim Scripture, we are sowing seeds of faith, stirring hearts, and opening ears to Christ, the Word made flesh. As it is written:
“Indeed, the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword.” — Hebrews 4:12

Being a Lector is a journey of grace, growth, and deep communion with the Word of God. You don’t need to be perfect — only willing. Through prayer, preparation, and the support of our vibrant African Catholic community, you will grow in both spiritual maturity and liturgical excellence.
